Our Dance Genres

Ballet & Pointe
Aligned with the SFD Classical syllabus, Ballet is the foundation of all dance training, developing strength, technique, precision, and artistry that supports every style. At Studio V, our Ballet program guides dancers from their first steps through to advanced classical training, offering structured classes from Beginner to Advanced, including Pre-Pointe (from Level 5) and Pointe work for senior students. Progression to pointe is carefully assessed by our experienced teaching staff to ensure safe, confident, and age-appropriate development, while nurturing a lifelong love of ballet through musicality, discipline, and expressive performance.

Jazz
Jazz is a high-impact, performance-focused dance style that fuses classic jazz technique with contemporary, commercial, and industry-driven influences. Known for its sharp lines, dynamic movement, and strong stage presence, Jazz challenges dancers to perform with power, precision, and confidence.
At Studio V, Jazz students train through the Southern Federation of Dance (SFD) syllabus (Levels 1–10), building strength, flexibility, musicality, and professional-level technique. This style is ideal for dancers who love to perform, move with intensity, and develop the skills needed for stage, screen, and commercial performance opportunities.

Tap
Tap is energetic, expressive, and incredibly fun — a style that turns rhythm into movement and music into performance. At Studio V, our vibrant Tap program inspires dancers to find their voice through sound, timing, and musicality, while building coordination, confidence, and stage presence.
We offer Southern Federation of Dance (SFD) Tap Levels 1–10, exploring both Broadway Tap and Rhythm (Jazz) Tap styles. Broadway Tap focuses on theatrical performance and musical theatre technique, while Rhythm Tap develops musicality, timing, and improvisation skills. Together, these styles create well-rounded tap dancers who love to perform, create, and connect through music.

Dance Fusion
Dance Fusion is a dynamic and exciting Southern Federation of Dance (SFD) examination syllabus, designed for recreational dancers and technically trained dancers who wish to expand their versatility and performance skills.
This program places a strong emphasis on performance, style, and adaptability, rather than strict technical execution. Fusion blends a wide range of dance styles — including Bollywood, Cheerleading, Jive, African, Contemporary, and Hip Hop — creating a fun, fast-paced, and highly engaging learning experience.
Offered across four vibrant levels — Green, Yellow, Red, and Blue — Dance Fusion is perfect for dancers who love variety, enjoy performing, and want to build confidence while exploring multiple genres in one energetic program.

Hip Hop
Hip Hop at Studio V is high-energy, current, and seriously fun. Our classes are designed for boys and girls of all ages and abilities, from beginners through to advanced dancers, and focus on confidence, individuality, and performance.
This ever-evolving street style draws inspiration from current music, commercial choreography, and popular culture, with movement you’ll recognise from today’s music videos, live performances, and film. Our Hip Hop classes encourage self-expression, musicality, and strong performance quality — making them a favourite for dancers who love to move with style, attitude, and freedom.

Contemporary/Lyrical
Rooted in classical technique, Contemporary and Lyrical dance emphasise emotional connection, musical interpretation, and storytelling through movement. These styles encourage dancers to explore creativity, expression, and depth, allowing them to communicate feeling and narrative in a powerful and meaningful way.
Studio V offers Contemporary classes for all ages and levels, from junior through to advanced. This style beautifully complements Ballet and Jazz training, giving students the opportunity to experience both choreography and improvisation, while developing musicality, artistry, and expressive performance quality.

Acrobatics
Acrobatics is one of Studio V’s most popular skills-based classes, catering to students of all ages and abilities. This dynamic class focuses on building strength, flexibility, coordination, and control through safe, structured skill progressions.
In Acro, students work both standing and across the floor, developing skills progressively throughout the year. By year’s end, students can expect to have mastered many fundamental acrobatic skills, including cartwheels, round-offs, dive rolls, backbends, headstands, and handstands, with training tailored to individual ability and readiness.
Acrobatic skills are increasingly in demand across modern and commercial dance styles — and they’re incredibly fun too!

Production / Competition Teams
Studio V’s audition-based Production Competition and Performance Teams, led by industry professionals, provide dedicated dancers with exciting opportunities to perform at competitions, external events, and in additional end-of-year concert routines.
Team members are required to undertake core technique training, including Ballet and Jazz, and participate fully in the Production program, which includes Strength & Conditioning, Skills classes (Jumps, Kicks, Turns, and Drills), and Production Choreography. This structured training supports strong technique, performance quality, and versatility.
Applications and auditions are held in Term 4 (December) for placement in the following year. We are extremely proud of the ongoing success and continued growth of our Production Teams and the commitment shown by our dancers.

VCE Dance (Units 1-4)
Studio V offers students the opportunity to study VCE Dance Units 1 & 2 and Units 3 & 4, leading to a nationally recognised VCE qualification. Classes are taught onsite at our studios by a qualified VCE Dance and Secondary Teacher, Halina Craig, who also teaches at one of Melbourne’s leading girls’ secondary colleges.
VCE Dance equips students with practical and theoretical knowledge, analytical skills, and performance experience that support pathways into the performing arts industry, tertiary study, and a wide range of creative careers. The subject also enables students to make informed decisions about future study and career directions.
Applications are made directly through Studio V, and we work closely with each student’s secondary school to formalise enrolments.
Study pathways include:
- Year 10: Units 1 & 2
- Year 11: Units 3 & 4 (completing VCE Dance prior to Year 12), or
- Year 11–12: Units 1–4 across two years
