Ballet and Contemporary

Ballet & contemporary styles share many similarities. At STUDIO V all of our students are required to participate in classical ballet classes to develop core strength and dance technique which they will be able to use in all other styles of dance. It is compulsory for all Production students to take ballet classes to maintain their technique. We offer SFD Levels 1-7, Pre-Elementary, Elementary & Intermediate Levels

Tap

At STUDIO V we offer Levels 1 – 8 Tap in the SFD Syllabus. Two major variations on tap dance exist: rhythm (Jazz) tap and Broadway tap. Broadway tap focuses more on the dance. It is widely performed as a part of musical theater. Rhythm tap focuses more on musicality, and practitioners consider themselves to be a part of the Jazz tradition.

The sound is made by shoes with a metal "tap" on the heel and toe. Tap shoes can be bought at most dance shops.

Acrobatics

Acrobatics are offered to our Junior & Senior school students.

In Acro we start working on our own skills with a series of progressions, both standing and across the floor.

Students should expect to have mastered most of the basic skills by the end of the year, including standing back bends, cartwheels, round offs, dive rolls, head stands, hand stands etc. Each student progresses at their own rate, so some may find they can simply master a perfect cartwheel while others may find it a little more natural and move forwards into harder skills like one handed or areal cartwheels.

All Production students take part in our Acrobatics classes to increase their agility & flexibility.

Pointe Work

Pointe classes are offered to our Intermediate & Senior classical students. All pointe students must complete a Pointe Assessment from a recommend physician that we refer our students to. Once they have passed the assessment, they are eligible for pointe work classes. Preparation for pointe work is a gradual process, starting with strengthening exercises at the barre. This varies according to the teacher's preferences, method, and syllabus. The first exercises at the barre are usually relevés and échappés.[6] Once the student is fully comfortable in executing the steps on both feet (and the tendons are strong enough), steps ending on one foot are introduced, such as pas de bourrée en pointes and retiré en pointes.

After barre work, the student progresses to centre exercises, usually led by an instructor stressing proper turnout, pointing of the toes when raised, and proper use of ballet technique while en pointe. In centre practice, Mme Vaganova[7] suggests as first exercises on both feet relevés and échappés en pointe.

Production

Studio V offers Production Squad Classes for our Junior, Intermediate & Senior school students. Students selected in this class are chosen through an audition process. Students learn a variety of routines in different styles, including Song & Dance, Musical Theatre, Broadway, Classical and Jazz which we perform in competitions, external performances and our end of year concert. All production students must attend Classical Ballet classes – compulsory – as this maintains their technical level required for competitions. Our teachers of our production classes have external industry experience, and bring with them a wealth of knowledge in a variety of styles of dance.

Pilates

The basic concept of Pilates conditioning is to increase awareness of the body as a single integrated unit, to improve alignment and breathing, and to increase efficiency of movement. The exercises are based on the principle that by developing a strong and flexible torso with a stabilized core (abdominal, back and pelvic muscles), the whole body can be balanced, aligned and conditioned for optimal performance. STUDIO V offers pilates classes for mature students.

VCE Dance

Studio V offers students the opportunity to study the accredited subjects of VCE Dance Units 1 & 2, and 3 & 4 which leads to a nationally recognised qualification. The subjects are taught onsite at our studios, and delivered by a qualified Dance and Secondary Teacher who also teaches at one of Melbourne’s leading local secondary girl’s colleges. VCE Dance provides participants with the knowledge and skills to achieve competencies that will enhance their employment prospects in the performing arts industry as well as enabling participants to gain a recognised credential and to make a more informed choice of their career paths. Applications must be made directly through Studio V, and we work in conjunction with the student’s secondary school to have enrolments formalised.

Please note: Students may study VCE Dance in Y10 and do units 1 & 2 and in Y11 do units 3 & 4 so that one VCE subject is completed before they start Y12.  Alternatively students may start in Y11 to do units 1 & 2 and complete units 3 & 4 in Y12.
